“You can change what you do. But you can’t change what you want” - Thomas Shelby (Peaky Blinders) Human beings are fickle. Single minded. Often utterly selfish (no matter their outward appearance). There are things that we want, and whether our social status, natural abilities or financial might make them achievable or not doesn’t matter. We want them.
Whether we act upon our desires, well, that depends on just how far the levers have been pushed in each direction. But even if a man’s selfishness and single minded gauges are set to zero, make no mistake, we still want them. Take Tommy Shelby. We know him as a man who conducts business with a cigar in his mouth and a glass of whisky in hand. He craved social recognition, wealth, authority. Power. Nothing would quash these dreams. Not his gypsy humble beginnings, not even his PTSD suffered from fighting as a tunneller in WWI. Nothing. Despite his inevitable success, though, he was no different to anyone else. He just needed the right lever, to be pushed enough in the right direction, to spark the need to act. In Tommy’s case, it was dissatisfaction. Dissatisfaction with his current situation. The desire for more. The desire for power. So it doesn't matter what job someone had. Where they live. Or what their status is in life. Everyone has instincts. Everyone has cravings, and everyone has desires. Desires that need to be satiated. They just need someone to move the levers a little They need us. - Mr Big
